Null-sec Corporation Member Participation as a Management Style

Recently our alliance has acquired residence in a far-off region in null-sec. By far-off I mean high-sec is far from this location. This set my mind to thinking; I have always been of the opinion that a pilot with reasonable skills should be almost as effective with all T1 (Base Tech 1, meta zero) equipment with full fleet bonuses applied as a pilot using T2 equipment. In addition I believe that the larger the fleet size the the more insignificant the difference.

So this set me to thinking of how a remote alliance and/or corporation could operate far from Jita. First lets assume the above opinion has some merit, then lets also suppose that all members have the ability to at lease build T1 equipment and are able to mine, using T1 equipment, minerals from asteroid belts, isotopes from ice belts, and perform planetary extraction (PI) of minerals for POS fuels. Based on this supposition it would now be totally possible for a null-sec alliance to operate even more independent from high-sec than a w-space alliance.

So lets assume that a corporation could call for a "Corporation Day", where all the bounty income, mined ore/ice, ratting and mission loot/salvage, and finally all PI are given to the corp. This would then form the basis on which all members would receive, based on their ship requirements and skills, either required fitted ships. By ships I mean all the ships the corporation require of a member to have permanently in his hanger for use in defence of corporation space. This is usually determined by the alliance fleet doctrine. The corporation could also make blue print copies (BPCs) of all these ships and modules and hand them and required minerals to members for the required production. Finally income derived from this "Corporation Day" are used by the corporation to insure PVP and mining ships before they are used and in addition these funds can be used to furthermore acquire corporation sponsored skill books, implants and boosters which can only be acquired easily from high-sec.

Now that we have all members in ships the alliance/corporation can use for PVP and we have these ships insured by there corporation, the loss of the ships has cost the member nothing but his/her social time spend as a member of this social group. But there is one cost that has always been a holding back high skill point members and this is clone skill point insurance, the price of immortality. Some members have to fork out more than 20mil to insure their skills. Since the ships are insured by the corporation, payout for destroyed ships will now accumulate in the corporation wallet and these funds can now be used to replace the funds members have to use for skill insurance and in addition also the replacement of authorized implants, such as fleet boosters.

Since ships, modules and ammo are build and distributed by the corporations themselves, this will impact on the region average price for these ships which in turn can and will impact on insurance payouts. However to counter this is easy, all the corporation has to do is put some of the excess ships on the market at much inflated prices and thereby over time raise the average price of these ships on the market which in turn will lift the insurance payout of these ships thereby increasing the income generated from the loss of ships in PVP. It should be noted that with the current game mechanics no pilot should engage in piracy since destruction by concord negates insurance payout.

The obvious flaw, for any that care to look, is that in null-sec there is, and always will be, the requirement for some T2 ships and equipment. Ships such as bubble ships, interceptors and bombers fit this description and should be part of any large fleet with regards to the strategic advantage these ships represent. None the less, given the huge reduction in the replacement cost of downed ships and pods, as well as, the acquisition of POS fuels it is now possible for the corporation to use POSes to extract Moon minerals and build the necessary T2 ships which will be distributed to members that qualify and specialize in their function.

At the end of each cycle each member of the corporation is awarded an equal proportion of excess funds, less reserves, based on member activity during "Corporation Day". It should be noted that unlike most corporation set-ups this one event determine payout for contributors as this event, even when run multiple times in a period, is what makes the corporation self sustaining.

Some members PVP + rat and other Build + mine, and often it is found that unless the systems are defended on a continues basis neither mining not ratting is not profitable. In these cases miners are often guarded by PVP players. This also mean that mining ships are included in the corps arsenal of ships it build and insure. As such mining should be done in a proper fleet, and in addition all members must participate in system defence whenever required. Since the corporation now provide all ships and clone insurance there is no reason why industrials can not help to defend the system. To state the obvious, miners will/should not be PVPing in their mining ships and the corporation should have a hanger, at their Safe POS, full of PVP ships for miners to switch into if attacked, this should not happen at a station as it provides no defence.

So how does this “Corporate Day” income work.
  • From ore mining the minerals are extracted
  • From ice mining the POS fuel production components are extracted.
  • From the loot all usable modules are reserved, while non usable modules are reprocessed for further minerals or sold to members or on the Jita market. Note sometimes hauler spawns provide pure minerals as loot.
  • All salvage are used to produce rigs and excess are sold on the Jita market for corporation wallet income.
  • The bounty in itself is direct income.
  • This means that from loot the corporation acquire usable modules which does not have to be produced. From minerals the corporation will produce ships and modules. Wile the direct income is used to insure ships and purchase non producible items from Jita. Finally the fuel components are used to fuel corporation and approved member towers as well as capital fuels.
Member remuneration and “Corporation Day” :
Remuneration based on “Corporation Day” are divided based on a simple point system:
Miners get a point for every hour you mined within the mining fleet, while Ratters get a point for every hour ratting. In addition manufacturers get a point for every ship production, fully fitted, they accept and deliver. It is hoped to encourage all members to build their own ships and equipment and thereby increase the production efficiency of the corporation/alliance.

Corporation Excess:
It is assumed that in due time the alliance will build up some excess beyond a reasonable reserve of both isk and minerals and unless used for a corporation project should be distributed back to the members based on historic activity on “Corporation Days” over multiple periods.
It should be mentioned that for this process the corporation wallet and journal should always be viewable by all members of the corporation.

Marketeers:
I am of the opinion that marketeering to the point of maximizing individual member profits at the expense of other members is demoralizing for most members of any corporation where this happens, it is therefore a requirement that marketeers not sell any ships build by the corporation, without approval, as this will affect the market average which in turn will affect insurance payout.

Finally:
While I realize that this writ incorporate a lot of non capitalistic principles, it has to be understood that eve is not controlled by plenty of laws protecting the individual. In fact lawlessness is encouraged to foster strive and revenge, and so is inequality. Therefore the only defence in this is to structure a society within the game to only depend on itself and to have as few as possible weaknesses. For a corporation following these principles even the loss of their space and all infrastructure is trivial in comparison to the alternative of owning and depending on moon income and forcing members to part with hard earned income in defence of their space and leadership, no matter how charismatic and loved those leaders may be.

Will it work:
Honestly I have no idea, quite possibly these ideas may be flawed in some very important way. I'll leave it at that. In the next part I will present a couple of fits I think that an aliance/corporation such as above may benefit from.

Please see the fits page for an example of T1 ships and their fits.
